don’t you ask random questions
questions are pregnant amoebae
questions multiply and divide incessantly
three heads for the one cut
ten heads for the one burnt
the birth of an answer breeds another question
demanding justification
nasciturus pro jam nato habetur
its share of death
as the wise raw man said
answers are eternal additions and subtractions
looming behind marble sepulchers
leaving only darkness in their inverse wake
traumata with countless solutions and none

what autumn leaves?

before departure I opened
the old trunk in the loft
breaking its bronze hasps
freeing the entrapped harpies
buried deep in autumn leaves
leaves of lost books 
of rusty dreams

then I anchored myself
between the tv set and paradise
lipreading Beatrice reciting Boccaccio
nobody can unravel the sea untravel the sky
said uncle Dante
 I live in purga-  she lives in -torium he said
we’re back to back I daresay
we’re back to where we started

then I roamed the silent streets
garnished with limbless trunks of truncated soldiers
what could I do or undo
considering the nervous ticking of the clock
it’s time gentlemen
give or take a few heartbeats
give or take the boom boom of
forgotten futile massacres
or the boom of the markets
or the sharp song of the shrapnel
echoing the rhyme of heroic coupling
echoing the verses of heroic poetry folios
echoing the laughter of
the unrepentant follies

here he cometh
from the womb of darkness
εκ κοιλίας άδου
don’t trust him
the unrooted dead
the uprooted sailor
the potato magician
the sorcerer that never searched
the mamma of the soldati

save your soul
but in second thoughts
save the soles of your shoes

[a blitz in time saves nine
said bill to tony] 

laudate eum
in tympano et choro
laudate eum
in cordis et organo

he holds the strings of the purse
where your treasure is
where your blood pulses
this hermetic hermes
he sleeps oneeyedly at noon
and is hungry for new hatched babies
every morning

the sweet elusive city
that you may go around and around of
or down to its tender ways
to its raw back alleys
where the system streets cannot catch you
you know all the lies of the system streets
the lays and the stretches of the system streets
their shifty rules and their shifty eyes
their shifty poets
and their shifty murderers
you can elude them
before they could say jack robinson
or jack the ripper
you are the jack of all trades
master of all delusions
master of all illusions
you were born in that diaphanous cloud
beyond all mortal ages
within the foam of eternal seas
